Care Guide
Caring for stainless steel costume jewellery is relatively easy because the metal is incredibly durable and resistant to rust and corrosion. However, to keep it looking shiny and prevent damage to any plating or stones, a little bit of maintenance goes a long way.
Stainless Steel Jewellery Care Guide
Stainless steel is loved for being "life-proof," but even the toughest pieces need some TLC. Follow these steps to keep your jewellery looking brand new.
1. Daily Wear Tips
- The "Last On, First Off" Rule: Always put your jewellery on after applying perfumes, lotions, or hairspray. The chemicals in these products can dull the finish over time.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Take your jewellery off before using bleach or heavy cleaning detergents.
- Chlorine & Saltwater: While stainless steel is water-resistant, chlorine and salt can eventually damage the protective layer of the metal. It’s best to rinse with fresh water if it gets wet in the pool or ocean.
2. How to Clean
You don't need fancy cleaners! A simple routine works best:
- Soak: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in a bowl of warm water. Let your jewellery soak for 5–10 minutes.
- Scrub: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean any intricate details or settings.
- Rinse: Run it under lukewarm water to remove soap residue.
- Dry: Pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
- Do not let it air dry, as this can leave water spots.
3. Storage is Key
Even though stainless steel is scratch-resistant, it can still be scratched by harder gemstones (like diamonds) or other metals.
- Store pieces in individual soft pouches or separate compartments in a jewellery box.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture build-up.
A Note on Plated Jewellery: If your stainless steel is gold or rose-gold plated, avoid polishing cloths treated with chemicals. Use only a plain, soft microfiber cloth to prevent rubbing the plating off.
